The Arthur Curry Scholarship Program is a program
created by David and Pearl Dutcher (Port Republic Maryland) to
reward direct descendants of Arthur Curry (Talladega Alabama)
for outstanding achievement throughout their grade school and
high school years. Recognition of such achievement will be provided
in the form of cash awards and certificates (deferred awards),
which, upon successful entry into a college program, the recipient
will be able to use to draw money from a bank account that will
be set up for this program. The cash awards will normally be handed
out directly to the winners by the sponsors, between Thanksgiving
and Christmas of the year being considered. However, in cases
where the sponsors cannot be present, someone within the family
will be asked to hand out the awards on their behalf. The purpose
of the cash awards is to give Curry descendents immediate recognition
for their outstanding achievements. The purpose of the deferred
awards is to provide these same children an opportunity to build
a college fund based entirely on their own performance during
their early school years.
In addition to the awards mentioned
above, the program may also sponsor contests, in which qualifying
members may compete with other members for special prizes or cash
awards. These events will be announced on a web page, which is
being created, and for which all participants will be required
to register for. More information on the special contests and
the web page will be provided at a later date.
Award Deadline: 31 October of
current year.
Award Determination At the end of each school
year each participant must submit in mail or electronically a
copy of their final report card for that year. He/she will then
be awarded cash and/or Certificates for outstanding grades achieved,
depending upon the categories involved. Grade categories, such
as "Physical Education" will not be considered, as the
purpose of this program is to motivate the children to seek perfection
at the highest levels of difficulty. Currently, only the following
categories qualify:
Language, Spelling, Science, Social Studies,
Mathematics, Conduct, and Art/Music*.
Other categories may be added by the sponsors
in the future.
Cash Awards: $20 cash for each “A” grade received.
Certificates: Certificates are deferred awards,
and are evaluated in the same manner as the cash awards, except
that each participant will be awarded 50 points for each A and
an 100 additional points for “All As”. The student with the best
grades for the year will be awarded an additional 200 points.
